Greg Zimmerman appointed as Fire Chief
December 5, 2016, Greg Zimmerman assumed the role of Fire Chief for Altona / Rhineland Emergency Services. Chief Zimmerman was chosen by a selection committee with representatives from the Town of Altona, the Municipality of Rhineland and Altona / Rhineland Emergency Services.
SKills Connect was pleased to have been part of the search process in partnership with Dan Gagne and the Council. Greg has been a pleasure to deal with and we know he will add to the community.
Chief Zimmerman began his career in Prince George, British Columbia in the Pineview Volunteer Fire Department and in the City of Prince George Fire Department where he rose to the rank of Captain. From there he moved on to the position of Assistant Fire Marshall for the Government of the Northwest Territories where he was responsible for the delivery of fire safety programs and assisting communities in all matters related to fire prevention and emergency response. For the past four years, Chief Zimmerman was Fire Chief for the Town of The Pas and the Municipality of Kelsey.
Along with his over three decades of experience, the selection committee recognized Chief Zimmerman’s commitment to professional development. Chief Zimmerman holds multiple certifications in fire, emergency management and first responder training. A self-proclaimed training fanatic, he believes in involving people in preparing and executing training to keep the team motivated and sharp so as to not get complacent. These qualities were identified as important to keep building upon the department’s already strong reputation.
Chief Zimmerman and his wife Maureen have one grown son Michael, daughter-in-law Sara and three grandchildren William, Penelope and Russel. Chief Zimmerman looks forward to working with members of Altona / Rhineland Emergency Services and both municipal partners to move the department to the next level. “I feel very fortunate to take over a well-established, trained and equipped fire department, a job well done by my predecessor,” said Chief Zimmerman. “I am very excited on becoming the newest member of the town’s dynamic and progressive team, and my wife and I are looking forward to becoming members of the community.”
