ThirdQuarters Seek Range of Jobs

"People have a lot of reasons why they don't have to work full-time, but they do want to work. With the ThirdQuarter project, you have the opportunity to select whatever suits your lifestyle, or what' happening in your life at that time."

There are many reasons why individuals want to return to work after retiring. In these economic times, some individuals must return to work for financial reasons. As a result, a number of programs and services have emerged to help older workers return to work after retirement or seek new work after being laid off. At the same time, other individuals want to "unretire" for a wide range of non-financial reasons. According to a 2007 Statistics Canada survey of older Canadians, the main reason for returning to work of some type was the desire for social interaction. Only one-third of older Canadians returned to work after retirement for financial results.

Recent research by the Rand Corporation found that many individuals enter retirement knowing and planning to re-enter the workforce, but different types of occupations, jobs or in volunteer positions. The majority of people seeking to unretired do so for non-financial reasons: desire to contribute to the community; need for social and people interaction; the discovery that retirement can mean remaining active; and a wish to start encore careers working their passions or building on prior learning or hobbies. As one ThirdQuarter individual noted, " since my retirement I have bought grain for an ethanol plant, organized fund raising dinners, helped companies at trade shows and sold market research services. I don't want to tied down to a permanent, year round job when I have use my skills and experience in so many different ways."

As a result, ThirdQuarter Canadians seek out a wide range of job types, including volunteer opportunities and positions. Over its initial eight months, ThirdQuarter asked registering individuals what types of work they wanted. As the chart indicates, the vast majority of ThirdQuarter individuals indicated their preference for part-time work: 53% of them indicated interest in part time work, including on call, evenings or weekends. Fourteen percent are willing to accept seasonal work. Another 17% are open to contract work and only 16% have fulltime work as one of their preferences.

These views of ThirdQuarter individuals match the interests of firms. A 2009 survey of Manitoba business found that firms want the experience and maturity that older workers bring to the workplace. They want individuals with a commitment to work and the ability to mentor other staff. And, business is more than willing to be flexible in how they organize the jobs and the hours to accommodate ThirdQuarter workers. As one Saskatchewan firm indicated, "I can grow experience in my staff immediately with a ThirdQuarter worker. I can get years of maturity from day one."
