ThirdQuarter Fills a Niche and Needs

"Not everybody is made for retirement."

The mayor of Osoyoos welcomed ThirdQuarter to the picturesque South Okanagan town in April.

At a reception during ThirdQuarter's conference of provincial and community co-ordinators from B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces, Mayor Stu Wells said the national program will benefit the snowbird and tourist destination.

"There's so many opportunities for short-term employment," Wells said.

"The younger people, they're looking for full-time employment. If we can fill that (casual-employment) niche and that need through this program, I just think it's brilliant."

Osoyoos is known for its fruit orchards and wineries, areas where ThirdQuarters' maturity and people skills would fit well with jobs such as hosting wine tours.

The town also has many tourist-related businesses and activities, which benefit from having employees who know the importance of friendly customer service.

"A town councillor's wife just retired from the Royal Bank and she's going into the wine sector on a real limited part-time basis and filling that niche and her needs," Wells said.

"Not everybody is made for retirement."

He also noted the ThirdQuarter program could have a positive impact on the lives of snowbirds and new residents who flock to the balmy B.C. location.

"There's a lot of people who move to this area and they've been here for three years and they would like to be involved, but don't really know how," Wells said.

"This program is going to get them involved in the community and turn them into volunteers. It's going to really broaden their experience with a new community. They want to, they just need the incentive and the impetus to get it going."

During the conference, ThirdQuarter community co-ordinators and program staff learned the program has registered more than 820 firms and 2,100 workers since the launch of its 12th Canadian community last October. There have been more than 630 jobs posted on the website, a number that has been growing since December 2010.

"Across the project, there is growing evidence that firms are not only hiring ThirdQuarter Canadians, but they see it as a smart business decision," said project executive director and Manitoba Chambers of Commerce president Graham Starmer.

"And their employees are telling us these jobs are giving recognition to their lifelong skills and experience, while providing them with new careers and fulfilling work. The constant message is that they now have the best jobs of their lives."
