An Easy Way to Hire

"We thought (ThirdQuarter) would be a good fit for us because the individuals on the website are the type of people we're looking for."

When Shirley McCourt retired a year ago, she didn't want her working days to be over.

However, she also didn't want to re-enter the workforce on a permanent full-time basis.

"I enjoy working and still feel that I can contribute in some way," said McCourt, 62, who'd worked in administration and human resources for decades.

"I knew I'd probably look for part-time employment at some point. I would also consider temporary full-time employment."

She wasn't too sure where to start looking for a job, but then she read a story about ThirdQuarter in a Summerside, P.E.I., newspaper early this year.

"At my age, there's not a lot of opportunity for employment so I thought it might be a good opportunity," said McCourt, whose last job before retirement was working in human resources for the department of health.

Soon after she registered with ThirdQuarter, matches started coming in. Some interested her, others didn't. Then she received an alert about a job through ABI BUSINESS SERVICES INC. in Summerside, which provides temporary employees for various clients.

McCourt was hired to fill an eight-hours-a-week position at a local aerospace company. The company offered her flexible hours and she chose two mornings a week. She does warranty billings using Excel spreadsheets, as well as invoicing.

Financially she'd like more hours, but so far the job is meeting her needs.

"It was new work for me, a little bit," McCourt said of the financial spreadsheets. "But once I was there for a few weeks and felt comfortable with the work, I was enjoying it."

ABI BUSINESS SERVICES spokesperson Niki Clow said McCourt is exactly the type of employee they seek."We were looking for someone with a lot of experience," she said.

"Part of our business is temporary office help, which involves hiring individuals for a week, a few days or even longer. They're all term positions with a beginning and a very specific end date.

"We thought (ThirdQuarter) would be a good fit for us because the individuals on the website are the type of people we're looking for."

Before registering with ThirdQuarter in the spring, ABI hired a mature gentleman for a full-time position doing inventory conversion and data entry at the same aerospace company as McCourt. He also had the desired experience.

"It's a short-term position so (companies) don't want to invest a lot of money in the training, so being previously trained is very important for us," Clow said.

She found the ThirdQuarter website "user-friendly" and likes the skill-matching component, which saves time in the hiring process.

"There's not a lot of jobs out there so young people will apply and you'll get 20 or 30 resumes and maybe two of them would be good candidates," Clow said.

"But these (ThirdQuarters) are more selective and they're only applying for positions that they think would be of interest to them and in their field of experience."

She also appreciated that McCourt and the other hire were presentable, mature and would represent the company well.

"They've got the confidence," she said.
